Batman the Dark Knight

This was a commission I drew a few years back. Gotham's very own Dark Knight detective in the animated style. I pencilled this one directly on bristol board, and then inked it with a #3 Red Sable Kolinsky Raphael brush. I regret not making the lower part of his right leg visible, in hind sight. It really bugs me now when I see this piecee. Not showing his lower leg was a mistake--one that I would certainly not repeat today. Learning to draw is a life-long process, folks. I've been drawing for nearly 34 years of my life, and I'm still learning the ropes. I hope I never stop learning and improving.

I still think the animated BATMAN tv series and the JUSTICE LEAGUE animated tv series depicted a quintessential Batman. On those shows, he's a detective (He isn't really in the movie incarnations), a shadowy figure to be feared, but also someone who stands for justice. A protector of the innocent. The characterization is about perfect in the animated shows, I'd say. He's not a deranged psycho--he's a man, driven to prevent his personal tragedy from becoming someone else's fate. It's that simple. He's a hero. That's the Batman I'm familiar with and care about. Hollywood should take a few notes from the Timm camp.
