Thing Collage by LostonWallace Thing Collage by LostonWallace
The finished Thing illustration. The figure of Ben grimm was rendered in ink on 11x17" smooth bristol plate. The floating heads in the background were drawn with "B" graphite pencil. I drew Ben in a fighting stance to show off his tenacious nature. The heads above him represent many significant characters in Ben's life. There wasn't enough room to include everyone important in his life. Unfortunately Ben's nephew,Franklin, Thundra, Lockjaw, and many others didn't make the cut. If I had my druthers, I'd have included H.E.R.B.I.E., Aunt Petunia, Willie Lumpkin, the rest of the Inhumans, the Sandman and a host of other characters in there, but such is the way of the world. Regardless, I did my best to include a good mix of heroes and villains. I did manage to sneak in Wyatt Wingfoot (a personal favorite) at the last minute!

I wanted to keep the pencilled heads above Ben's figure because I felt that added a little symbolism to the illustration. Ben is a man-monster who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, so I tried to tip my hat and acknowledge that aspect of the character in the layout.

This illustration was done for my good friend, Steve Funnell, AKA Brokenhill :iconbrokenhill: , the world's biggest Thing fan! Hope you like it, Steve. Don't take any wooden nickels, ya Yancy Streeter!

I'm so glad that I inspire you, Smrgle! I really appreciate you noticing such details in the art. It's often the little things that make a huge difference, and it means a lot that people are noticing!

Awesome! I love seeing things in both black and white and color. Ideally, the illustration should stand up on it's own either way. :) Thanks for your comments!

This is the perfect piece except for one thing....Its not hanging on my wall!

the thing is my favorite character, ever. it's tough to draw this guy convincingly, and most of his power to draw us in is tied into his back story and his relationships with others. needless to say, his big heart and his black and white view of morality have provided a moral compass for many an emerging youth, and I sincerely wish that marvel would take note of the tremendous potential of this character. Loston draws him with just the right amount of kirby, and I can appreciate that. you hit this one out of the park, buddy.

Thanks, Gary! I really got into this one. I got to draw the characters the way I'd personally enjoy seeing them if I were still reading the FANTASTIC FOUR. It was fun having the opportunity to salute Kirby, Sinnott and Lee, while providing a nice image for my buddy! I don't know anyone who loves the Thing more than Steve. This drawing went to a good home! :batman:
