Leave It To Chance for Paul Smith

Description

Paul "Smitty" Smith has been one of my favorite comic artists since 1983, so I was overjoyed when Paul recently suggested that the two of us do an original art swap! You bet I agreed to that!! Paul's originals go for TONS of money, and there's no way I could afford to buy his art, so this was a godsend! Thank you, Paul! Exchanging requests, I asked Paul to draw the Hulk fighting the Fantastic Four for me. I knew it was kind of shooting for the works, but I was thrilled when he agreed to do it! Paul requested that I draw two characters he co-created: Chance Falconer and the ghost pirate, Captain Hitch from his comic series, LEAVE IT TO CHANCE! Yikes! Yep. I had to draw the characters that Paul designed, and (pretty much) has exclusively drawn. Hmm. Yeaahhh....That's kind of like having Mike Mignola request a drawing of Hellboy, or something like that. Geez! No pressure, right? lol. Well, it was a tall order to draw characters for one of the actual creators, but , I think I actually managed to pull it off, and Paul was very pleased with my efforts. I'm very proud of this piece! It was harder to draw than it probably looks. There was a lot of detail to juggle, and many things to consider in the inks. I pencilled it onto bristol board, and inked it with a brush and India Ink.

If you've never read LEAVE IT TO CHANCE, it was written by James Robinson and drawn by Paul Smith. It was about the adventures of a 14 year old girl named Chance Falconer and her pet dragon, George. It was published in 1996 by IMAGE COMICS, and it ran 13 issues. It won a HARVEY AWARD for BEST NEW SERIES and an EISNER AWARD the same year for BEST NEW SERIES and another for BEST TITLE FOR YOUNG READERS. The series has been collected in a trade edition, and back issues can still be found floating around in back issue bins, so I highly recommend checking it out!

By the way, Paul's piece for me was off the charts!!
