Artist's Comments

I found this the other day--it's a year or two old I figure--I barely recall drawing some of this, to be honest. Yesterday, I decided to toss some colors on this old page of warm-up sketches. It's just some quick, semi-loose sketches, but I enjoyed coloring the shot of Iron Man and the Velociraptor. I always like drawing Conan, Spidey, etc.

Kind of miss that classic Iron Man armor....

Thought I'd post 'em.

These are great. I think I saw these either on UB.net or PJ a while back without the color. I really like that Spidey -- very Joe Mad!-esque, and of course, I think you should be handed the mantle of Conan to revive Big John's (the best) version of him. :)

Good stuff. :)

Very cool sketches!

Hey, this doesn't have anything to do with your lovely sketches, but since I saw Conan here I thought I'd mention that I saw Dark Horse is reprinting the Savage Sword magazine stories in "Essentials" format! 500 pages for 18 bucks...thought you'd like to know! A couple of BWS's, Neal adams' conan stuff is in it, and tons and tons of Buscema/alcala!

I'd love to pick up some of those Dark Horse reprints, but I haven't yet.

they're much better than the color versions dark horse released...they recolored the old stuff and RUINED them. I'm not into computer coloring at all, but whoever did THESE computer colorings must be new and inexperienced...awful!

I write. Well, maybe not...

Doug Wildey is one of my art heroes. I love his work on JONNY QUEST and his comic series RIO, in particular.

Thanks, man.

I saw some of the recolors, and frankly, I wasn't impressed with those either. Right now there's two types of computer colorists working in comics--the artists and the technicians. The artists are those skilled in color and color theory, and often work in color outside of Photoshop. They tend to be painters, etc already, and have a good knowledge of when and when not to add something. They know the meaning of the word "restraint". Technicians tend to lack the color theory experience, and don't seem to know when and when not to add certain effects, etc. These guys often over render, and use loud and gaudy colors where subtle color shouuld probably have been applied. Sadly, I think there are STILL more technician colorists working in comics today than colorists who are truly artistic, and understand the overall goals of the art. It's getting better though. The industry has come along way since the harsh coloring of the 90s. Colorists like Dave Stewart and Laura Martin are showing the way for a lot of the newer colorists out there.
