Here's a vintage commission I did many years ago, back when I was drawing BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES kids books for DC Comics Licensing. The client wanted Batgirl hunting down a vampire at the Gotham Cemetery. They also requested that I put their name on one of the tombstones, and I was happy to oblige. I got a kick out of giving the vampire a mullet! Business in the front--party in the back! heh. Mostly though, I enjoyed showing Barbara doing some detective work instead of just standing around posing in pin-up fashion. I focused on trying to convey a little storytelling, and worked to give the piece a little atmosphere by using lots of lighting. I also did a lot of dry brush inking techniques to add just a bit of halftone to the image, to give it a little more realism, which I think adds to the seriousness and drama of the situation. Hey--I had to balance out the mullet thing with some sort of seriousness! lol.
It's been nearly a decade since I illustrated this commission image, and I'm still proud of it for holding up so well. I am constantly hearing positive things about this particular piece from fans who have seen this image on my website or someplace else on the interwebs. Several people have digitally colored this image at my request, or have requested to take a crack at coloring it. The lighting always proves to be a challenge, even to the most seasoned colorist, but I've seen some nice hues on this one over the years, and I hope to see more color versions in the future.
Well, you gotta love the Barbara Batgirl from BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES! Thanks for taking this trip down memory lane with me.
This is amazing. I love the strong use of black here, with the great highlights to define the characters. The pose is awesome, love the vampire looming over her.
I remember loving this image when I first saw it, so much so that I was one of those eager beavers who thought they would have a go at coloring it. Here is my 2007 effort [link]
Thanks for posting this. I think like you say here it was seeing Batgirl actually "detecting" that drew me to the image.
